Boxing Day Premier League review

Saturday 26th December 2014

The festive fixtures kicked off at Stamford Bridge and the league leaders. Chelsea continued their assault on the title and maintained their 100% home record with a 2-0 win against high flyers West Ham. Chelsea have won 9 out of 9 at home and only conceded 3 goals. West Ham dropped to 5th with the defeat which ended a 5 game unbeaten run.

Man City kept up the chase at the top with a 3-1 win at West Brom. City are undefeated in 9 games (winning 8 and drawing 1) as they attempt to keep pace with Chelsea. West Brom suffered their 2nd successive defeat but stay 15th.

Man Utd stayed 3rd after beating Newcastle 3-1 at home. United are unbeaten in 8 and have only lost once in 13 games. They have not defeated defeat at Old Trafford since the opening game of the season. Newcastle drop to 10th with their 3rd successive defeat. After winning 5 games on the trot Newcastle have only won once in the last 6 games.

Southampton moved into a Champions League spot with a 3-1 win on the road at Crystal Palace. After 4 defeats Southampton have won back-to-back games to move to 4th but welcome Chelsea next at St Mary's. Palace drop into the bottom 3 and haven't won in 6 games

Arsenal remain out of the European spots despite a 2-1 win at home to QPR. Arsenal have only lost once at home all season and have won 3 on the trot at the Emirates. QPR have lost 11 games this season and have failed to win to go 2 games without a defeat. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet away from home all season.

Bottom club Leicester continued their bad run after going down 2-1 at home to Tottenham. Tottenham stay 7th with their 3rd win in the trot and have won 5 out of the last 7 games. Leicester look doomed as they have now gone 13 games without a win losing 11 of those games and are now 6 points adrift of safety.

Swansea stay 8th as they look to cement a top 10 finish with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa. Swansea win back-to-back 1-0 games to stay 8th. Aston Villa are the country's lowest scoring team and have failed to score in 50% of their games this season.

Liverpool move to 9th after beating Burnley 1-0. Liverpool got their first win in 4 games and their first away clean sheet in 11 games in all competitions, Burnley drop back into the bottom 3 after failing to score at home for the first time in 7 games.

Stoke move to 11th after a 1-0 win at fellow mid-tablers Everton who drop to 12th. Stoke and Everton are both having up and down seasons with neither team producing consistent results this season,

Hull climbed out of the bottom 3 with a 3-1 away win at rivals Sunderland. Sunderland ended a 3 game unbeaten run, whereas Hull had gone 10 games without a win before todays game.

Saturday 20th December
With the league leaders, Chelsea, in action on Monday night Man City had the chance to close the gap at the top of the table, They had a comfortable 3-0 at home against Crystal Palace to move level on points at the top with Chelsea. 2 Goals from Silva and another for Toure gave City a 6th straight league win and 8 in all competitions. Palace drop to 17th and have no win in 5 but more worryingly only 1 win in their last 11 league games.

Man Utd lost ground in the race for the title as they had to come from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw away at Aston Villa. The draw ended United's 6 game winning run and are now unbeaten in 7 but remain 3rd. Villa move upto 12th and have only lost once in their last 7 outings.

West Ham continue their remarkable season with a 2-0 home win over struggling Leicester. West Ham have now won 4 out of the last 5 and lost only once in 11 games, Leicester have not won in 12 and have lost 10 of those games and look in serious trouble of getting relegated.

Southampton stay 5th with a 3-0 win at home to Everton who fall to 11th. Southampton ended a run of 5 straight defeats as they look to hold onto a European place. Everton's up and down season continues as they go down to a 3rd successive away defeat.

Tottenham are 7th after a 2-1 home win against a Burnley team who drop back into the bottom 3. Harry Kane's remarkable season continued as he scored his 14th goal of the season in all comps. Although Burnley dropped into the bottom 3 they have turned their season around after going the first 10 games without a win they have now only lost 2 in the last 7.

Swansea are 8th with a 1-0 away win at struggling  Hull. Swansea recorded their first away since since the opening game of the season. Hull have now gone 10 games without a win and have not scored in the last 3.

QPR's great home form continued as they moved out of the bottom 3 with a 3-2 win over fellow struggler's West Brom. QPR have won 4 out of the last 5 at home and scored in the last 8 at Loftus Road. Charlie Austin's hat-trick moved him to double figures for the season. West Brom have lost 5 out of the last 7 and have been dragged down near the bottom of the league.

Sunday 21st December
Super Sunday started with a Tyne and Wear derby as Sunderland went home 1-0 victors from Newcastle. Sunderland upto 14th with their 3rd win of the season. They have only lost 4 games all season but drawn 10. Newcastle stay 9th as they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 5 games.

Arsenal and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Anfield. Arsenal upto 6th as they scored in their 10th straight game. Arsenal have only lost 1 in their last 5. Liverpool go 10th but have failed to win in their last 3 games.
