12/08/12 - Manchester City win the Charity Shield

FT: Chelsea 2-3 Man City

Manchester City win a feisty season opener against Chelsea today. The match ended 3-2 with Chelsea ending the game  with 10 men.

Chelsea took the lead after 40 minutes slightly against the run of play with City enjoying the opening exchanges. Things took a turn in City's favour though when Kevin Friend sent off Chelsea's Ivanovic for an over the top tackle on Kolarov shortly before half time. The game was all but over after City scored 3 goals in 12 second half minutes. Firstly Yaya Toure (53) levelled things up before Tevez (59) and Nasri (65) out city 3-1 up. Young Bertrand (80) pulled a goal back for Chelsea after an almighty mistake by Pantilimon in the City goal, but never looked like equalling and so City saw the game out to seal their fourth Charity Shield.

One of the talking points though will be the amount of cards in a so called friendly opening game. 1 red and 5 yellows for Chelsea with Man City ending with 3 yellows. Is this a sign of a competitive season in the premier league? or was it another showing of over the top refereeing from Kevin Friend? either way it was a cracking start to the season.
